The 2013 Power And Influence Top 50

Sixteen years ago today The NonProfit Times released the first edition of the Power and Influence Top 50. The report listed the 50 nonprofit executives that we determined were at the top of their field. Since then, there have been many multiple-time honorees and some new ones.

With this year's edition, there is quite a bit of turnover.

The 2013 Power and Influence Top 50, included in the August 1 edition of NPT, features 18 first-time honorees. In addition, there are three returning executives who will be returning to our September Power and Influence Top Gala in Washington, D.C., after some time away. The evening’s keynote will be national commentator Juan Williams.

Some of the new faces in this year's list include:

  • James (Jim) Manis, the Mobile Giving Foundation;
  • Jacqueline Novogratz, Acumen;
  • Anthony D. Romero, American Civil Liberties Union;
  • Vanessa Kirsch, New Profit Inc; and,
  • Chris Anderson, Sapling Foundation/TED

You can view the full list by clicking here.

Of course, the Power and Influence Top 50 is not the only part of the August 1 issue. Other major articles include a piece on retaliation lawsuits, restructuring at the Girl Scouts, and how World Wildlife Fund and other organizations handle compressed workweek schedules.

UPDATE: We have extended the deadline to complete the Survey to July 26th.

Every year, The NonProfit Times and Bluewater Nonprofit Solutions publish the Nonprofit Salary and Benefits Reports. Besides helping all nonprofits with their compensation packages, completing the 2013 Salary and Benefits Survey, has other benefits. Those who complete it by the deadline will qualify for a chance to win an iPad Mini and you will receive a free executive summary of the Survey results. Since we know that your time is valuable, we have instituted some new features to make completing the Survey easier and faster than ever. In addition to some general streamlining, previous participants now have the ability to jump start the 2013 survey completion process–you only need to change the data that is different.

Other new features include:

Wanted: Participants For The 2014 Best Nonprofits To Work For Report

Do you think your nonprofit is the best for which to work? Now is your chance to prove it by nominating your organization for The NonProfit Times' 2014 Best Nonprofits To Work For Report.

NPT, along with the Best Companies Group, releases a report of the 50 best nonprofits to work for in the United States every year. Last year's study was highlighted by the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), a Jacksonville, Fl.-based organization that helps veterans who were injured in combat. This was the third year in a row that WWP won the top honors; will it win again in 2014, or will a new organization take the crown?

Other top organizations included the American Heart Association, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Alzheimer's Association.

Now is your chance to see if WWP will reign again, or if another nonprofit will dethrone it. Simply go to the Best Companies Group website and register to participate. There is no cost to complete the survey online, so all we require is your time. All applications must be submitted by October 11.

Once registered, participants will receive the following information in their e-mail:

  • The Employer Benefits & Policies Questionnaire;
  • The Employee Engagement & Satisfaction Survey;
  • Survey distribution instructions; and,
  • Other supporting materials and instructions.

As an added benefit to completing the survey, all participants will have the opportunity to purchase the Employee Feedback Report, which details the results of their specific survey. These would normally cost thousands of dollars if initiated independently.

Register today to make sure your nonprofit is represented in the 2014 study!

The 50 Best Nonprofits To Work For In 2013

Cross-Posted From The NonProfit Times Blog

Each year, The NonProfit Times conducts a study to determine which nonprofits are the best for which to work. Many organizations come forward to see if they can be named the best, but only one can stake the claim as the number one Best Nonprofit To Work For.

The winner for this year's report, The 50 Best Nonprofits To Work For 2013, is the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), taking home the title home for the second year in a row. The veterans nonprofit was also named the overall best large organization, meaning it has 250 or more employees. Coming in second in that category was Alzheimer's Association, followed by Natural Resources Defense Council, American Heart Association, Year Up, and Masonic Homes of Kentucky, Inc.

In terms of the overall rankings, WWP beat out by such well-known nonprofits as the LIVESTRONG Foundation (#19), DoSomething.org (#11), and Make-A-Wish Illinois (#30).

How do we come up with these rankings? It would seem that the things that make an organization great to work for are subjective, but there is a method to the process. Each year, NPT partners with Harrisburg, Pa.-based Best Companies Groups which conducts a survey of the nonprofits that wish to be ranked in the report. The survey studies all aspects of the organization including benefits and employment practices. Employees were also given a confidential survey of statements with which they could agree or disagree covering eight general categories: Leadership and Planning, Corporate Culture and Communications, Role Satisfaction, Work Environment, Relationship with Supervisor, Training and Development, Pay and Benefits, and Overall Employee Engagement.

The average for all nonprofits that participated was 85 percent favorable rating; for those making the Best Workplaces list the average was 89 percent. The best averages came in Work Environment, 92 percent for all nonprofits surveyed and 94 for those making the list; Relationship with Supervisor, 89 percent of all and 92 percent for those making the list; and, Role Satisfaction and Overall Employee Engagement, each with 88 percent approval for all and 90 percent for those making the list.

Now that you know how the report was compiled, you can head to our website to see the complete list of the 50 Best Nonprofits To Work For 2013.

The New Nonprofit Job Seeker

If you have been to The NonProfit Times' website this morning, you will have noticed it looks a little different. This is the result of a new design we have been working on for some time now which will make the site easier to navigate.

“This new evolution of our web platform reflects a year-long effort to meet the information needs of our readers and advertising partners,” said John McIlquham, president/CEO of The NonProfit Times. “We're proud of these changes because our subscribers have been vocal in what type of information presentation they need us to provide. Our advertising partners also provided valuable feedback.”

The re-design also has ramifications for the Nonprofit Job Seeker, the site's career center. The site has now been updated to match the new look of the NPT site, and has been added directly to it instead of being on a separate URL: https://www.thenonprofittimes.com/jobs/

The launch offers a more integrated approach to executive functions so that web visitors can tour information on all three sites from one location. There will be interactive links to education, online libraries, grants and jobs boards that multiply a visitors’ ability to tap into a substantial and growing information base.

We are also happy to announce that the new website has been optimized for smartphones and tablets, allowing users to access the latest nonprofit news and information wherever they are.

"We're excited about this new effort to reach out to more organizations looking for expertise in managing, hiring and promoting their cause," McIlquham noted, "because technology has opened vistas for our subscribers in accessing information that will translate into new ideas, new opportunities and new funding for their missions." Visit http://www.thenonprofittimes.com to learn more about the re-designed site.

Nonprofit Salaries -- Getting In The Know

The release of The NonProfit Times' 2012 Salary and Benefits Reports is good news for both organizations and job seekers. Nonprofits can make sure the compensation they are offering employees is in line with industry standards, and job hunters can ensure they are getting a fair deal when they get a salary offer.

While most of the reports deal with both salaries and benefits, there are some that want to know more about just money rather than perks. For those individuals, the 2012 Nonprofit Salary Report is the best choice.

This report provides the latest and most complete salary information available on 254 nonprofit positions from entry level to the executive office including base salary, bonus practices, total cash compensation, salary increases, employee turnover, and more. Salary data is presented at three different levels -- by position, job family, and organization -- to provide a comprehensive view of pay practices at all levels of a nonprofit organization. There are a large number of job titles included in the report, all of which can be viewed on our webpage.

Salary data is always changing in the nonprofit sector, and the 2012 Salary Report let's users easily see how data has shifted from 2011 to 2012. Information is presented by multiple views to allow for fast and easy comparisons against relevant peer organizations by geographic location, operating budget and field of work.

You can purchase the report on NPT's online store, where you can also view the other 2012 Salary and Benefits Reports.

New Grant Opportunities From NPT

Cross-Posted From The NonProfit Times Blog

We are continuing to post new opportunities to our grant page, with three more being added today from the IEEE Foundation. Two of those three grants fall under newly added categories: Technology and Human Services.

While both categories are important, we're going to feature the Human Services posting here. Take a look:

Type of Grant: Human Services
Grant Name: Applying Technology for Humanitarian Causes
Agency(s): IEEE Foundation Closing Date for Applications: Two deadlines – March 15, 2013 or August 6, 2013

Description:

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Foundation is offering grant opportunities for organizations seeking ways to improve the lives of others using technology. The IEEE Foundation supports projects that implement or disseminate replicable, sustainable, technology-based solutions for humanitarian issues in underserved and underprivileged areas.

Eligible Organizations:

All nonprofits are eligible to apply for a grant as long as they meet the following requirements:

  • The organization in question must be an IEEE unit or a charitable organization;
  • It must agree to IEEE’s Grant Reporting Guidelines (https://www.ieee.org/organizations/foundation/guidelines.html);
  • It must accept the Foundation’s Grant Payment Terms & Conditions (https://www.ieee.org/organizations/foundation/requestgrantpayment.html);
  • The project must be five years or less in duration; and,
  • It must fit within one or more of IEEE’s focus areas (in this case, humanitarian).

Grant payments depend on the length of the project. For example, programs that are 12 months or less in duration will receive 50 percent of the initial award payment after the Grantee has completed an IRS Form W-9. The remaining 50 percent will be paid after the final Grant Report has been submitted along with a financial statement.

You can find out more information at https://www.ieee.org/organizations/foundation/grants.html

The 50 Best Nonprofits To Work For In 2012

There are a lot of factors that go into making a great workplace. Great pay is always nice, but organizational culture plays an important role as well. Have you ever wondered which nonprofit jobs ranked up there with the best in the country? The NonProfit Times has that answer for you.

In the recently released 50 Best Nonprofits To Work For 2012, organizations were ranked based on a survey that was sent to the employers to get information policies and practices. This was followed by a survey sent to the nonprofits' employees, which contained 72 statements to which they responded using a five-point agreement scale. These statements covered topics such as role satisfaction, work environment, pay and benefits, and relationship with supervisor.

Out of all these questions came the final list, headed by the Wounded Warrior Project for the second consecutive year. Other qualifiers included:

  • Brighton Center (#2)
  • Alzheimer's Association (#5)
  • IREX (#13)
  • LiveStrong (#26)
  • Playworks Los Angeles (#33)
You can read the rest of the list on our website. Have you ever applied to any of these nonprofits?

The Future Of Volunteerism And National Service

Cross-Posted From The NonProfit Times Blog

As you are probably aware, the Dec. 1 issue of The NonProfit Times was just released the other day.  Included in that issue was a special report entitled "2012: The End Of The World Or Nonprofit Renaissance?"  This report features six columns by major nonprofit personalities like Adrian Sargeant of the Center on Philanthropy and Ben Duda of AmeriCorps Alums.

Duda, who works as executive director at the organization, wrote a piece about national service and volunteerism.  And sticking with the end of the world theme, he discussed what place they have in America in the future.  He argues that they will endure as long as citizens demand that they do.

AmeriCorps was kind enough to blog about the piece he wrote for us, which we are very grateful for.  You can read the entire article in his blog post, but here's an excerpt from it to whet your appetite:

I’m not buying the “end-of-days” hype. I’m fully confident the Mayan Calendar will join the list of dubious doom predictions, alongside Harold Camping’s end of the world timing in 1994 or May 21, 2011, no, wait, Oct. 21, 2011, the hysteria of the Y2K computer failures, and those classic National Enquirer cover stories from the supermarket checkout line. But since we’re talking predictions, here’s where I think we’re going as a sector and as a country.

There’s a new wave of critics on the value of national service, as the (Mayan) calendar turns to 2012, with some in the House of Representatives advancing a zero budget going forward for AmeriCorps. That is not a very good idea. Its not very good for our country, especially for a generation of young Americans who want to serve their nation, and who will one day lead this country.

Is it the end of the world? No, although it certainly feels like a re-run of a bad sitcom. National service will endure and we’ll be thankful it does as a generation of nonprofit leaders, elected officials, and entrepreneurs ascend with a common career arc that is rooted in volunteerism and defined by national service.

More than 700,000 Americans have served in AmeriCorps since 1994. For 1,700 hours in service to the country this year, a member gets $5,550 toward loan repayment or future education. That’s a good investment in our future workforce and future leaders. Best of all, it represents a $2.01 return in essential services for every federal dollar, nearly unmatched when analyzing government spending.

6 Ideas For Your Cover Letter

From The NonProfit Times Management Tips page:

Resumes seem to have a set form while cover letter get free reign. Don’t forget that the creativity behind a cover letter still needs some guidelines, according to Bruce A. Hurwitz, vice president of New York City-based Joel H. Paul & Associates, Inc., a national executive search firm for the nonprofit sector.

Hurwitz set the ground rules for cover letters at Fundraising Day in New York held by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater New York Chapter.

Check out his cover letter checklist:

-Short and sweet. This isn’t your college thesis and potential employers don’t have time to read a novel. Keep your cover letter to the point.

-Use bullets. Bullet points draw the eye to the most important information.

-Credentials. Tell them why you would be the perfect fit for the job. Point out how you’ve solved problems or made decisions at prior jobs.

-Contact information. Papers get separated. Make sure your contact information is on the cover letter. Try not to include any ridiculous e-mail addresses.

-In closing. Hurwitz said to have an appreciative close to the letter. It shows you are grateful to be considered for the position.

-Proofread. Spelling mistakes will put you in the “no” pile fast. Spell check, proofread, give it to someone else to proofread and then repeat. There’s no room for errors.
